Animal Shelter

In October 1998, Sheriff Al Williams approached Janis Hunter and asked her if she would become Suwannee County's Animal Control Officer. He did this because of a desperate need in our County and he knew that Janis had held that position in Hillsborough County. She agreed to take the job and has taken what amounted to a holding pen for animals to the facility that was built in October 2002. Our shelter at this point needs to expand. Currently we can accommodate up to 50 dogs and about the same number of cats. Unfortunately, in a County this size, that is totally inadequate. Please, we desperately need financial aid and volunteers to help out. Although Janis is paid by the County, the shelter is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. We depend on money we raise through donations, sales and grants.
